Dr. J. Christopher Fowler is Associate Director of Research at the Menninger Clinic, Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He is a Fellow of the Society for Personality Assessment, Consulting Editor for the Journal of Personality Assessment, and a member of the Society for Psychotherapy Research.  He has written or co-authored over 45 articles and book chapter on personality assessment, suicide risk, psychotherapy outcome studies and psychodynamic interviewing.

Program Objectives

At the conclusion of the course, the participant should be able to:

  1. Integrate evidence-based elements into his/her clinical practice.
  2. Conduct efficient clinical assessment of psychiatric severity to improve treatment planning and monitoring of progress and outcomes.
  3. Cooperate with colleagues to contribute to the evidence base for psychodynamic treatments.

Program Summary

The research community tends to view treatment resistance as a function of a single psychiatric disorder, but this view does not comport with the experience of clinicians. Many individuals do not get well despite their best efforts, usually because of co-occurring disorders or rigid adaptive styles.  This daylong conference will address gaps in our understanding of the crosscutting dimensions of “severity” and “dysfunction” to test whether these phenomena may be clinically relevant behavioral markers for treatment resistance.

Prior to the conference, attendees will anonymously rate two of their own cases on scales provided in advance of the conference, including the evidence-based Defensive Functioning Scale.  During the morning presentations, psychology trainees will analyze the data.  The afternoon session will include an interactive discussion of the results of the research exercise that will allow participants to self-assess their approach to patients.  Thereafter, two clinician-researchers will moderate the summary discussion to amplify and wrap up the day’s work.

Please include your E-mail address with registration in order to receive the packet containing the rating sheets, data entry forms and instructions prior to the conference.

Consortium for Psychoanalytic Research, Inc

The Consortium for Psychoanalytic Research, Inc is a District of Columbia not-for-profit corporation representing a dozen Baltimore-Washington area organizations interested in building a bridge between clinicians and clinically relevant research. In recent years, there has been a burgeoning of research on psychoanalytic psychotherapies that enhances our understanding of the process and outcomes that characterize effective treatment. We have also seen the fruition of longitudinal studies of human emotional development that are informed by psychoanalytic concepts. The CPRinc sponsors annual conferences to bring researchers and clinicians together to share data and ideas, with the aim of bridging the gap between the clinical and research communities. Our conferences feature formal presentations by an outstanding researcher, didactic and interactive discussions, and a workshop ("lab session") in which all participants have an opportunity to learn and use a research tool. Our Research Conferences provide Continuing Education credit for physicians, psychologists and social workers. Full information is available in the brochures of individual conferences. Members of health care professions other than these three are most cordially invited to attend; and they will receive a certificate attesting to their participation.

The organizations that comprise the Consortium are listed below.
  • American Society of Psychoanalytic Physicians
  • Association for Psychoanalytic Thought
  • Baltimore-Washington Institute for Psychoanalysis
  • Great Washington Society for Clinical Social Work
  • Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis
  • International Psychotherapy Institute
  • Jungian Analysts of Washington Association
